Stoke Minster, Saint Peter ad Vincula

The J.J.Binns organ in its previous location. The organ at Stoke Minster was originally built in 1899, commissioned by Henry J. Johnson for his home in Oulton. It was later moved to Westwood Hall, Leek, where it was installed in his music room. The organ originally had four manuals and pedals, the solo and echo divisions originally being situated in another room.

After the the First World War, Johnson donated the organ to Saint Peter's Church in memory of relatives who had died in service. There is a plaque on the organ to this effect.

The organ was erected in the church in 1921, located on the west gallery. In 1972 J.W.Walker & Sons carried out a rebuild on the organ after its condition had deteriorated so much as to make it necessary. The organ was reduced to a three manual, but with a more complete specification. The old console was removed and a new detached console was built on the north gallery.

Saint Peter ad Vincula, was made a Minster during a ceremony on May 17th 2005, in recognition of its role in the surrounding area. The site has been used continually for worship since Pagan times, and the church and its grounds are filled with history.

In the church grounds the remains of the old Saxon church can still be seen, along with the burial place of Josiah Wedgwood. Whilst inside, the original Saxon font is in use, after being reclaimed from a garden where it was being used as a plant pot. The walls of the church are lined with diamond tiles, of some historic value, inscribed with the names of the deceased.
